PCOI History Background

With this as a backdrop, it became increasingly clear that there was a pressing need to unite all implant groups not only for the congress but also to better pursue the common vision and mission espoused by all concerned. The root of all these took final form and shape at the ICOI World Congress XXIV and the 10th ICOI AP-Section Congress held in Taipei from October 18 to 22, 2006. Impressed and fully convinced of the need to bring a world class event to the Philippines, where there is a huge demand for implants, implant education and research, members of the Philippine delegation namely, Dr. Eliezer B. Blanes, president of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA); Joseph D. Lim, associate Dean of the University of the East College of Dentistry; Benjamin F. Racela, President of the Philippine Society of Osseointegration; Jose Teofilo R. Manuel Jr., Jay Hansel I, Tabije, Reynaldo M. Villacorta II and Jennifer A. Bautista, decided to bring the congress to Manila. Fueled by the strong encouragement and initiatives of Blanes, Racela and Lim, then a member of the ICOI-APS Board of Directors, was able to win crucial support and eventually succeeded in ensuring the winning bid for the Philippines. Preparations were eventually made for the first ever ICOI Congress in the Philippines. Eventually five groups joined hands to form the PCOI, namely, the College of Oral Implantology of the Philippines, the Philippine Society of Osseointegration, Philippine Academy of Implant Dentistry, the Foundation for Oral Implant Research of the Philippines Inc., and the Bicon-Straumann Group. With the acceptance of the application of the PCOI by the Securities and Exchange Commission last September 24, 2007 and the endorsement of the Professional Regulation Commission, the PCOI moved from a dream to a reality.
